Personality:

Ratchet back in the beginning of all of his adventures was not the hero he is in the present. Back before Clank and his first adventure, he was a very selfish teenager. He dreamed of bigger things than being stuck on the Planet Veldin all his life. Without an actual family to take are of him and having to survive on the planet with some help from local natives and on his own, he quickly become self oriented. It was his survival and his wants first, others later. He wanted fame, money, adventures, all the things he could never get on Veldin. Which is why he originally said he would help Clank find Captain Qwark. He needed Clank to start his ship as he was equipped with the component he needed. So it wasn't in a sense of duty to help the galaxy, it was for a ride. Which played out later during his first adventure. He did most things simply for the reward, not because they were the right things to do. He also grew enraged at Captain Qwark's betrayal and vowed revenge, ignoring Drek who was the bigger problem. It wasn't until after he realized Drek was going to destroy a planet and everyone on it for his own ends that Ratchet was able to snap out of his rage and realize he had to stop Drek. By the end of the adventure, Ratchet had made a friend and Clank and the two become inseparable due to the bond they had created. It was throughout the rest of his adventures that led Ratchet to discover much more about himself and what mattered to him.

One of the biggest of course being Clank. To Ratchet, Clank is more than just a friend. He is his best friend, his conscience, his partner in heroics, and according to TVTropes, his heterosexual life pattern. And it's true. The two of them were each other's first friends and they went through a lot together. Both were betrayed by Qwark, both tracked down the thief in the Bogon Galaxy after Clank was tortured by her. They fought Dr. Nefarious together, organic and robot, trying to save all organics in the galaxy. They were trapped in DreadZone and it was Clank that helped keep Ratchet level headed and focused. If not for Clank, Ratchet may have given into the temptations held by the insane Gladiator tournaments. It was Clank who saved him when he was being experimented on by the Technomites and the two of them took on an army of Ratchet clones together, vanquishing them all. Clank was there to help Ratchet during his trials against Tachyon and discovering his past. They fought about a lot during that time but in the end it was Clank that led him on the right back and saved the Polaris Galaxy and vanquished Tachyon, something even the Lombaxes could not do. And it was when Clank was spirited away by the Zoni that Ratchet felt true heartache. His best and closest friend was stolen in front of him and he could do nothing. He searched for an entire year, fighting impossible odds, an army of Ghost Robot Pirates, and traveling through time to find and save Clank. And despite it all, he was willing to let Clank go and to live in the Great Clock like he wanted. He may not have wanted to, but he was able to let go of Clank if it was his wished. It hurt him greatly but in the end he would do anything for Clank.

Being a Hero is also something important to Ratchet. He does enjoy the title and knowing that people look up to him. He enjoys knowing that people can turn to him in times of trouble, even with all of the added trouble the title can bring him. He's always loved the thrill of adventure, the adrenaline rush of facing insurmountable odds to win against them and know he did it with just himself, Clank, and an arsenal of weapons most of the time. This does give him a bit of an ego, of course, but as he grew older he grew humble as well. He knows when to boast and when to keep it under control. It's a careful balance but he's got it. Then again, his track record is impressive and he knows it. He does genuinely enjoy helping people though, learning early on being selfish was not going to make him happy. One could say Qwark definitely helped him see that, which would explain why he does try to help Qwark still, even to this day. It's part of his heroic nature to try and help people he thinks are good. Though this comes with his drive to make sure villains get what they deserve. He doesn't stand for people who willingly hurt others for their own ends. He does have a moral grey zone though. He has helped and been helped by people on the wrong side of the lay, such as The Smuggler and Cognito Slim, but this can be explained that they don't go out of their way to hurt others or do it consciously. They give services to people that the law frowns upon. Nothing too had about that to Ratchet. He protects the innocent, punishes the guilty, but that doesn't mean he's not afraid to break a few laws along the way. He's no Prince Charming.

With Clank and his Hero status, Ratchet seems very strong. But even someone as strong as him has weaknesses. And Ratchet has one big one; loneliness. It was the driving force behind his selfishness as a teen. If he only cared about himself, he didn't have to care about people liking him. He was alone since he was an infant on Veldin, never really knowing what he was or where he came from. All he knew was that planet and wasn't until later he found out about the Lombaxes and Tachyon. And then, seeing his homeworld devastated and devoid of life, it hurt him all the more. He hurt knowing he was the last Lombax and he had to give up his only opportunity to return to his people to stop Tachyon. Though he soon discovered there was one other Lombax out there, Alister Azimuth. And for a time he believed they could undo Alister's mistake and bring back the Lombaxes. But once he learned using the Great Clock like that could destroy the universe he gave up that dream. But Alister wouldn't. Ratchet had hopes that he and Alister could find another way to find the Lombaxes. But even deeper he was glad he would still have Alister as Clank was leaving him to stay at the Great Clock, and that is why it is the fact that Alister killed him that is the most hurtful for Ratchet. It pains him to know the only other Lombax in the Universe attacked and killed him without so much as batting an eye. It's the ultimate betrayal to Ratchet and one he won't soon get over.

And this carries over to one of this bigger weaknesses he now faces; the fact he's dead. Ratchet is going to know he's dead, remembering his death in vivid detail. This fact hurts as he knows he can never return home to help Clank stop Alister from using the Clock. He's stuck in a new world with people he's never met with lives they can all talk about. He can't. This new place to him is an afterlife, a new trial and one he isn't going to accept with open arms. He's going to be angry and reluctant to trust people for a while. He will resist going out with a partner for a time, thinking he can do everything on his own. Of course he'll learn he can't but that doesn't mean he will give in easily to making new friends. To him his fellow trapped souls will be allies and nothing more. He isn't here to socialize. He's here to fight his way out and leave, never to look back. He doesn't know what his purpose is anymore and will feel lost on the inside, numb even. It's going to take time for him to open up and let people in again. But once he does he will be a loyal friend to those he likes. He can play the nice guy well enough but when it comes to true trust, that will take a while to build.

This doesn't mean he still isn't himself. He is the hero from back home and will try to help people in anyway he can. He'll be the strong brave Lombax that will try to beat back monsters with just his wrench without a second thought. But inside he'll be changed. He won't be as social as he once was for some time and it will take awhile for him to return to any sort of normalcy. Death has changed him and possibly not for the better. His interactions with people are what will decide which way he goes.

Abilities: Ratchet himself is a fast fighter and strong to boot. He can carry weapons about his size and still be able to preform standing back, side, and front flips. He can jump fairly high himself as well and has good balance thanks to his feline-like nature. He has good hearing and fairly good night vision since Lombaxes lived on a desert planet and were possibly nocturnal. He can come up with tactics on the fly but don't expect him to be able to come up with them before a battle.

Coming with Ratchet are two items; his Omniwrench and his Hoverboots.

OmniWrench Millennium 12 The OmniWrench Mellennium 12, or Omniwrench for short, is Ratchet's main tool and melee weapon. It is a wrench made of ultra-light Teratannium metal and fitted with a hyper grip handle. This gives it a firm grip in Ratchet's hands so disarming him is no easy feat. It comes with a magnetized handle as well so if Ratchet throws the wrench it will return to him like a boomerang. It is also outfitted with a Kinetic Tether, which allows the head of the wrench to come off and attach itself to objects that Ratchet normally can't reach, normally a bold or a piece of magnetized metal. Ratchet and use the tether and the wrench to move large objects as long as they are not bolted down. He can also pick up things with it, such as grenades, and use the wrench to fling them back at enemies.

Hoverboots Ratchet's hoverboots were once his fathers and are Lombax made. They allow him to hover at a slow speed or zoom around should he use the thrusters. They can also be used to slow his decent should be be falling. They can go faster should they run over some form of boost panel on the ground but the chance of finding those in Vatheon is pretty slim.

Writing Samples: You must include any TWO of the following:

2. I smile at Clank, sitting up and letting my ears up more. His words are really helping me right now. Maybe he's right. Maybe I have fulfilled my purpose. Tachyon is gone, I've not only avenged my Father but all the other Lombax's that died during his betrayal. And in the end, Clank and I are close again. I really didn't like us fighting over the Dimensionator but I was blind to just how much of a threat it was. Clank was right like he always was and he stuck with me like he always does.

And then it happens. The air seems to burst open as a swirling portal of light and blue clouds appear above us. Three small creatures come through, black bodies with purple skin and blue eyes. I'm shocked when I see them and hear them talking to Clank.

“Whoa, Clank. Are these the Zoni?” I don't get an answer before they grab Clank, their energy knocking me back. I hit the ground with a thud, my mind whizzing now. No. This can't be happening. I sit up, my heart racing as I see them lift him towards that portal. They're taking my best friend away. I won't let that happen. I stand up, ignoring their words to Clank. I don't care what they're saying to him. I'm not letting him go!

“Let. Him. Go.” I growl when I'm finally on my feet again. I jump up, my arm outstretched. I almost have him, my fingers just about to wrap around his arm. But I don't feel him. Instead there is a flash of light and I'm hit with something invisible. I grunt as I'm slammed back into the ground, the air knocked out of my lungs. I can't let this happen, I can't. I get up, my back throbbing in pain, my lungs burning from the air forced out of them.

“Clank!” I call out to him, trying to get through. Why isn't he struggling? Why doesn't he fight back? I know the Zoni have to be doing something to him. He wouldn't willingly leave me like this. They make it into the portal and it collapses in on itself, taking the Zoni and Clank with them. I stare up at the empty air, my eyes wide and my ears hanging low. No...this can't be. Clank's gone...again. I haven't felt like this since Reepor when I thought he was dead. He's gone again, stolen from me and I couldn't do anything to stop it. I stand there, holding my wrist as I realize it's hurting from my fall. But that pain is nothing compared to the pain of losing him again.

I slowly look over at everyone else here. Talwyn, Cronk, Zephyr, Rusty Pete, and Qwark. They're all silent, staring at me as I look at them all. They're all here too but my eyes slowly turn toward the ground. I can still feel their eyes on me. They're as shocked as I am, sad, all looking with worried faces. Clank's always been there for me and now I've lost him a second time. I feel alone, even with them all here. I feel all alone again.
